More distance means more time to shed heat. The spiral coils the airway inside the pipe, so the smoke covers a longer path than the outside of the body suggests. That is the whole mechanism behind a smoke cooling pipe: no water, no filters, nothing to replace.

A spiral pipe rewards a fine grind. A coiled airway is a narrow airway, and coarse herb is what clogs it. Pack the top piece firm rather than tight, light while you draw, and take it steady. Drawing hard works against the design, since the smoke needs its time in the spiral to cool.
Soak it in isopropyl alcohol for at least 20 minutes, then rinse it through with warm water and let it dry. Residue collects in the spiral, so run water through until it flows clean instead of just wiping the ends. The nylon brushes in the Accessory Cleaning Kit reach the ends.
