THE HYDROPHOBIC SCREEN IS THE POINT
Every exhale carries moisture, and moisture is what ends a filter early. The integrated screen keeps it out of the media. That is why a cartridge lasts as long as it does instead of clogging inside a couple of weeks.

The media is paper rather than plastic, so a spent cartridge is a smaller thing to throw away than a whole device would be.
