Most of the smell in a room comes from what you breathe out, not from what is burning.
A personal air filter takes the exhale instead of the room. You breathe through it, and the carbon and HEPA-grade media hold what would otherwise end up in the curtains. $29.99, with a cartridge already fitted.
That is the whole mechanism, and it is why it works where an air freshener does not. A spray covers a smell after it spreads. A smoke filter catches it at the point it leaves you, before it reaches the room at all. Some people call this a sploof. Same idea, built properly.
Take the mouthpiece off and the cartridge slides out of the bottom. When it is spent, you replace the cartridge instead of the whole device. Cheaper over a year, and far less in the bin.
Breath is warm and wet, and moisture is what kills a filter early by clogging the media. An integrated hydrophobic screen keeps that moisture out of the filter itself. Rated for over 500 exhales per cartridge.
It comes off to wash. Worth doing, because the mouthpiece is the part that touches your mouth and the part that gets sticky first.
It captures the great majority of what you exhale through it, and in a shared house or an apartment that is usually the difference between noticeable and not. It is not a sealed system. It does nothing about what escapes from the bowl itself while it burns. Use it alongside ventilation, not instead of it.
Plain and small enough to sit on a desk without explaining itself. $29.99.
The 2 Pack Filter Replacement Cartridges keep it running. If you would rather have something that composts, the Plant-Based Filter is made almost entirely from cornstarch. Compare both in air filters and cleaners.
