The word decarboxylation may sound like a highly scientific one, and you may even be intimidated by the process. In simpler tests, as decarboxylation simply means removing carboxyl from the molecules in your herbs, allowing you to cook and consume it. This is because simply grinding or baking your herbs does not make them edible. In this guide, we share with you more about the process of decarboxylation.
What Does Decarboxylation Achieve?
Before consuming any type of herbs, they will need to undergo the process of decarboxylation to make them edible. Also known as “decarb” for short, this process usually occurs naturally when you cook or burn a herb. While it is up to you to take the additional step of grinding your herbs, it is not necessary to do so before the decarboxylation process – at the end of the day, it all boils down to personal preferences.
How to Decarb
Now that you are ready to begin the process of decarboxylation, follow the steps below to get started:
- Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. You will want to keep a close eye on your oven settings to ensure that your herb does not become too dry or too potent as a result of overbaking.
- You can either bake your herbs on our decarb kit or in our silicone oven-safe bags. If you opt for the first method, place your herbs in the 4 oz. food-grade stainless stain steel container. Cover it with the lid without closing the latches and place it in the oven. Allow them to bake for 30 minutes at 250 degrees Fahrenheit, while keeping a close eye on them all the time. Once the decarbing process is done, open the airlock and allow it to cool.
- The second method is also relatively simple. All you need to do is place your herbs in the silicone oven-safe and close it with a seal. After which, place it on an oven tray and bake for 30 minutes at 250 degrees. Your herb should be golden brown at the end of the process.
Regardless of which method of decarboxylation you opt for, keep in mind that you should avoid baking it for too long or at too high a temperature. This can result in certain relaxing compounds within the herb getting activated, which are not the results you want to achieve.
